4) We just built a gorgeous Mechitza after we shared the same anxieties as you
describe. What we did is as follows:
We went to a local Silk Florist and picked out a variety of plants that were
both beautiful and real life looking. The arrangement was ordered (by
catalog) and the florist then built the flowers into a styrofoam platform
which was then placed into a wooden box (10 inches wide x 3 ft long x 10
inches deep). The wooden box was made by us (our own handyman) stained &
shellacked - mahogany - very inexpensive but looks great). Each flower
arrangement was 4 feet wide (although the box was only 3 ft the flowers were
made to stick out a half foot on each side). The height of the flowers
(alone) was a little under 4 feet. The box was then placed onto a seminar
table - 4ft x 18 inches - (you see them at hotels). We dressed the table
with a tablecloth and burgundy pleated skirt to match the room decor. (the
mechitza stands well over 6 feet)
In total, we ordered 3 sets of flower arrangements which covered an area of
12 feet. (for occasions where more space is needed we always have the option
of ordering more arrangements or supplementing with trees as we presently do
for Bar Mitzvahs etc.)
The total cost excluding the tables was about $1200.
We used to use live plants but the maintenance and upkeep was just
time-consuming. Using lattice or curtains was never an option - over my
dead body! :)
Now, for the first time in all the years we are actually able to take pride
in our mechitza.
